It’s Fun to be Free in Orlando
March 17, 2008
Believe it or not, there are plenty of fun things to do in the Orlando area that cost you little or nothing at all. From art, to attractions, to family activities, there are a variety of diversions that won’t burn through your wallet.
At the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, in nearby Winter Park, you can study the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. See everything from the renowned Tiffany lamps to spectacular glass art. At CityArts Factory peruse the five galleries that show off a variety of cultural gems such as hand-blown glass and Zulu African sculpture. The Grand Bohemian Gallery at the Grand Bohemian Hotel has a terrific selection of modern art that can be viewed for no cost. For another interesting experience, visit the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts which is dedicated to the works made by artists of African descent.
Even the big attractions have their share of free fun. Take a stroll down Disney’s Boardwalk and watch the street musicians and other performers. At Downtown Disney® small children will enjoy the hands-on fun at the Lego Imagination Center® and the adults can window-shop in the many boutiques. You can revel in free nightly Italian music performances at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando® Resort.
The price is certainly right for these additional area attractions, too. Take a trip on foot through the downtown area of Celebration, a 1920s-style town developed by The Walt Disney Company. Nearby in Kissimmee, explore the 22,500-square-foot conservatory at A World of Orchids to enjoy the fragrant tropical plants. For more greenery, discover the flora at Harry P. Leu Gardens, a wonderful park that’s free from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays. And Lake Eola Park, in the heart of downtown Orlando, is a beautiful place for an afternoon stroll.
A couple of night clubs also serve up some free beer. Club Firestone, located downtown, features free admission and free drafts before 11 p.m. on Thursdays. Knightly Spirits also offers free beer every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
