Fun Times and Frog Jumping
August 20, 2008
Hop on in to Angels Camp, California, and discover the place that Mark Twain made famous in The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Calaveras County is a year-round vacation destination that features a variety of other attractions including a historic Gold Rush town, award-winning California wineries and tasting rooms, micro-breweries and pubs, eclectic art galleries, antique shops and Gold Rush museums.
Calaveras County is a terrific place to experience the great outdoors. If you like golf, swing away on one of the challenging courses in the area. For another way to enjoy nature, take a trail ride on horseback through the beautiful California wine country. For more fresh-air fun, hike through Big Trees State Park and be amazed by the grandeur of the Giant Seqouias. Calaveras County is also a fabulous place for cave exploring. Moaning Cavern is an immense limestone miracle with a cavern large enough to hold the Statue of Liberty. If you’re the adventurous type, you might want to try rafting down the Stanislaus River.
A great way to appreciate Calaveras County’s rich Gold Rush history is to do some old-fashioned prospecting. There are a number of places that you can still pan for gold in the area. For more reminders of Calaveras County’s days gone by, visit the Angels Camp Museum and see antique carriages, wagons and mining equipment.
Whether you prefer the charming boutiques or the antique shops, the shopping in Calaveras County is sure to please. There are also many fine art galleries that showcase the work of fine artists.
And if you happen to be in the Angels Camp area in May, it’s worth a trip to the Calaveras County Fair to see the frog jump competition that still goes on today.
