Kid Fun in Las Vegas
September 5, 2008
Most people think of Las Vegas as an adult playground, but you won’t have to look very hard to find fun things for the kids, too. Take time to seek out the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum and you will find something the whole family will enjoy. It’s been voted Best Museum in Las Vegas for 13 years in a row and offers plenty of hands-on activities and curiosity-piquing exhibits. A focus on interactive experiences brings the worlds of science, nature and culture to life.
In addition to a variety of featured exhibits that pass through the museum there are more than 100 permanent exhibits. Desert Discovery is a hands-on learning environment for children, ages 5 and under. Part of this exhibit includes Boulder Mountain where the wee ones can mine soft-sculpture boulders. Also, there is Desert in the Dark where children are able to experience the simulated sights and sounds of the desert after dark.
The first floor of the museum is dedicated to the arts and humanities. By stimulating the imagination through dramatic play, the kids get to use a wide range of motor skills and participate in problem-solving activities. Children can do things like creating computer art or hearing a whisper from 30 feet away. It is not necessary for children to read to enjoy these exhibits.
Elementary aged children can find things to do on the second floor featuring exhibits about science, communication and technology. Here, kids get to explore while they learn to cooperate and exercise their minds. Kids can strum a laser harp, stand in a simulated hurricane, play wheelchair basketball and much more.
