A visit to San Francisco just wouldn’t be complete without exploring Chinatown. Rich in history, this unique section of San Francisco offers plenty to see and do. With its sensational Asian cuisine, Oriental temples, authentic markets and more, Chinatown is truly one of America’s cultural gems. Here are some must-do sights you should take time to visit.
Chinese Six Companies — These stately building with lion-supported columns was once the political centerpiece of Chinatown. The six companies came to be to help the Chinese immigrants during the Gold Rush, settling disputes and fighting anti-Chinese laws.
Kong Chow Temple — Walk into this ornate temple and you’ll be overcome by the somber spiritual ambiance. The god to whom the members pray here represents honesty and trust, and he is thought to bring good luck.
Old St. Mary’s Cathedral — Built in 1854, this was the city’s Catholic cathedral until 1891. Today it stands in Chinatown as a remarkable symbol of the West.
Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory — Your nose and taste buds will find this to be quite a pleasing attraction. Watch the production line at this fun factory, and don’t leave without a few free samples. You can buy a bag of cookies with sexy “adult” fortunes or regular ones for about $3.
Portsmouth Square — Visit this bustling square with pagoda-like structures and you might be able to catch some morning tai chi. You can also watch dozens of men concentrating on their next chess move. This is definitely a cultural experience.
Old Chinese Telephone Exchange — This building is one of the examples of true Chinese architecture in Chinatown. Originally built in 1909, today this detailed three-tiered pagoda is home to the Bank of Canton.
Chinese Culture Center — If you’re looking for some exposure to Chinese-American art, there’s a gallery here that houses some interesting temporary exhibits. The center is also a place to go for calligraphy and Mandarin classes.
Chinatown Gate — With it’s stately lions, intricate dragons and fantastic fish, this is the interesting entrance into Chinatown.
