Napa Valley VineyardsThere’s a region of California about an hour north of San Francisco that’s as easy on the eyes as it is pleasing to the palate. Welcome to California’s wine country. With Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties at the heart of the action, this beautiful region produces some of the finest wines in the world. The combination of climate and soil makes for excellent growing conditions. The best part is many of the wineries offer tours and tastings where you can sample the delicious product. Yet this area isn’t just about your favorite cabernet, it’s also known for outstanding restaurants and rejuvenating spas. You can even peruse antique shops and engage in a variety of recreational opportunities.

Sonoma County — The closest wine region to San Francisco, this is home to some of the oldest vineyards and wineries in California. Some of the area’s highlights include Jack London State Historic Park featuring scenic views, hiking, picnic areas, horseback riding and a museum. Families can have a ball visiting Train Town. With its well-preserved adobe buildings, The Sonoma Plaza is a terrific place of shopping, dining and picknicking.

Napa Valley — Napa County made a name for itself in the 1960s producing wines that rivaled those from France and Italy. When your not busy admiring the gorgeous countryside, check out the quaint town of Calistoga, well known for invigorating hot springs and relaxing mud baths. It is also worth it to pay a visit to the Old Faithful Geyser and the Petrified Forest that are nearby.

Mendocino County — This area is the world leader in certified organically-grown grapes. It’s also famous for its gorgeous redwood forests.
