Discovering Fisherman’s Wharf

June 2, 2009

Fisherman's WharfDuring the Gold Rush era San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf was a place where Chinese immigrants in junks fished for fresh catch to feed the masses. Following that Italian fisherman sailed fellucas in and out of the port and set up family stands selling seafood along the beach. Today, Fisherman’s Wharf is still active with fishing vessels, but it is now mainly known as an area where tourists go to shop, sightsee and dine. Pier 39, the Canery, Anchorage Center and Ghirardelli Square are all within a short walk. While you’re in the area, make sure you check one of the real highlights — hundreds of sea lions that bark out lots of noise.

Situated at Pier 45 you’ll find the Musee Mecanique, home to the world’s largest collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines. Nearby you’ll also find the Museum of the City of San Francisco and the USS Pampanito submarine museum. Aquatic Park, which includes the San Francisco Maritime Museum is on the edge of Fisherman’s Wharf.
